Fiend Without a Face (1958) Synopsis
A US Air Force Interceptor Command Experimental Station in Winthrop, Manitoba is exploring long-range radar systems that rely on nuclear power for their ability to see into Russia. The local dairy farmers are upset because the quality and quantity of their milk has dropped off. Many blame it on radiation leaks from the base. Things really heat up, though, when a series of deaths near the base occurs - Jacques Grissel a scientific farmer out walking in the woods near the base; Ben and Amelia Adams, a farmer and his wife; the mayor and Constable Gibbons. During an autopsy, it is discovered that in all cases the victims have no brain or spinal cord left in their corpses. Major Jeff Cummings is assigned to defend the base in community dialogues. He starts by visiting Barbara Grissel, the sister of the first victim. She seems to harbor no ill will toward him and supports the view that radiation leaks are not responsible for the dairy problem. It is the noise from the planes that upsets the cows. That's why her brother's notebook has listings of flight activities. As they work through the situation, the major learns that she works for a local scientist, a Professor R.E. Walgate. He had suffered a stroke in the past and moved to Winthrop to continue his work with Barbara's assistance. His latest manuscript is entitled "Principles of Thought Control". The killers are manifestations of his work enhanced by tapping into some of the massive energy from the base reactor. Soon, the area is overrun with killers who are no longer invisible. They are brains with spinal cord tails that can fly through the air in attack mode.—Garon Smith
